IN A HEARTBEAT

Nobel Week Lights is an annual light-art festival in Stockholm, where Swedish and international artists create site-specific installations inspired by ideas, research, and stories connected to the Nobel Prize. Held during Nobel Week, the festival transforms the city into an open stage for contemporary light-based art. All installations are outdoors and free to experience.

The artwork In a Heartbeat is a sound and video installation grounded in the Red Cross’s humanitarian work and its four Nobel Peace Prizes: the three awarded to the organization in 1917, 1944, and 1963, and the first one given in 1901 to its founder, Henri Dunant.

The work is composed of real voices and archival material collected by the artist Charlotte Landelius from the Red Cross’s global network of volunteers. Testimonies and soundscapes form a poetic whole that revolves around the question: “Why do we care?”

The installation is divided by a horizon line symbolizing humanity and our shared, fragile world. Above and below this line, layers of archival material unfold, blending documentary fragments with abstract imagery. The red light evokes both a heartbeat and the emblem of the Red Cross, creating a sense of presence and empathy. It is a tribute to solidarity—both personal and collective—and to the courage shown by volunteers every day.
